Nunavat Wildlife

Nunavat has a wide variety of arctic species including caribou, muskox, polar bears, arctic wolves,arctic hares and marine animals such as walrus, beluga whales, bowhead whales and narwhal. Polar bears roam the ice floes stalking prey, and muskoxen thunder across the tundra, whales play and narwhals joust in ice-blue waters and Atlantic walruses can be seen basking on the rocky Arctic shoreline. Nunavut is a veritable birdwatchers’ paradise.

The people

Nunavut is the largest and least populated of all the provinces and territories of Canada, with a total area of 2,093,190 square km and a population of approximately 32,000 people (84% Inuit). Nunavut has strong historical ties to the Norse and the Vikings are thought to have been regular visitors to this part of the world. Official languages here, besides English and French, include Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun, which are spoken by the native Inuit people.

Climate

Spring and summer are the best times to travel as the temperatures are at their most comfortable. In the summer, up to 24 hours of daylight between April and August is the norm. In the winters, the temperatures are frigid and communities in the northern part of the territory are in total darkness.

What places do we visit?

Ellesmere Island – at 196 236 km2, is the third-largest island in Canada and the most northerly island in the Arctic Archipelago.

Baffin Island – 507 451 km2, 1500 km long and 200-700 km wide, is the largest island in Canada and the fifth-largest island in the world.

Auyuittuq National Park – an Inuktitut word meaning “land that never melts” protects 19,089 km 2 of glacier-scoured terrain. Located in the eastern Arctic, on southern Baffin Island.

Quttinirpaaq National Park – formerly known as Ellesmere Island National Park. Located on the northeastern corner of Ellesmere Islandin the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, it is the second most northerly park on Earth after Northeast Greenland National Park.

Sirmilik National Park – was established in 2001. Located on the northern tip of Baffin Island near Lancaster Sound, Sirmilik protects 22,252 km2 representing the Eastern Arctic Lowlands and Northern Davis natural regions.
