Sapmi´s Wildlife

Sapmi stretches over four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Sapmi is a largely unspoiled region with a magnificent array of flora, fauna and wildlife. You have chance to see large carnivores: Brown Bear, Wolverine, Wolf or even Lynx. Other mammals possible to see are Elk, Red Squirrel, Flying Squirrel, Arctic Hare, Roe Deer, White-tailed Deer, Wild Forest Reindeer, Otter, Red Fox, Muskrat, Raccoon Dog and Beaver. Beluga whale can be observed at the Russian White Sea.

The people

The Sami people which are also known as Sámi, Saami, Lapps, and even Laplanders, are the indigenous people of northern Europe living in Lapland. They are believed to have settled in the north of the Scandinavian Peninsula almost 4000 years ago. During the middle ages the Vikings are known to have pushed the Sami population to the northern part of the Artic circle. they have strong beliefs that anything living in nature such as trees, animals, minerals – have a soul. These are part of their religious beliefs. Their Economy is based on fishing, reindeer farming, hunting, and handicraft.

Climate

Sapmi is above the Arctic Circle, so it is extremely cold. Temperatures are usually below freezing point, ranging from -7C to -40C in December. There is thick snow in December, though you should be prepared for moderate snow even between October and May. There are limited hours of daylight or perpetual twilight between 10.30 and 15.00, while the rest of the time is night.

Härjedalen – is one of the highest above sea level located provinces in Swedish Sapmi.

Sylan - is the name of the border mountains between Trøndelag county and the Jämtland mountains of Sweden.

Funäsdalen - is Sweden’s third largest ski area. The Funäsdalen mountains constitute the southernmost bare mountain area in Sweden, with numerous peaks rising higher than 1,000 metres. Helags, at 1,798 metres, has the southernmost Swedish glacier.

Kola Peninsula – The Kola Peninsula is the northernmost territory of European Russia, situated north of the 66th Parallel. The territory extends 550 kilometres from west to east, and 400 kilometres from north to south. The Peninsula is bordered by the White Sea in the southeast and by the Barents Sea in the north and northeast. Karelia lies to the south, Finland to the west, and Norway to the northwest.
