This Baffin Island ski expedition starts from Iqaluit, the capital of the Nunavut Territories, in Eastern Arctic Canada. This spectacular route offers a variety of landscapes and challenges.
We start by skiing across 30 km of frozen sea ice on Frobisher Bay. Then climb 2000 feet, over the next 60 km, up narrow valleys to reach the high-lands of the Meta Incognita Peninsula. The next 45 km offers navigational challenges as there are few landmarks and the maps do not exist. We follow the Joy River, 30 km, with an ice fall that we must lower the sleds over. This brings us to the Soper River Valley that carves 60 km through Katannailik Park.
Katannailik in Inuktitut means, “The place where there are falls”. Finally we cross Soper Lake and over the hill to Kimmirut, the small Inuit community tucked into a fiord off Hudson Straight. You will have the opportunity to see the community and Homestay with an Inuit family.
In April you can expect temperature to be between -10 to – 20 C (plus wind chill), with 14 hours of sunlight. Skiers will travel with the skiguide, skiing 15 to 20 km a day carry a day pack with parka, extra mitts, thermos, camera, and lunch. A dog team, driven by a local musher with a participant, will carry the group gear: such as tents, stoves and food.
