This fantastic trekking adventure takes place in Mongolia’s “Wild West” among the snow-capped peaks of the High Altai Mountains, one of the longest mountain chains in Central Asia.

The Altai Mountains, with eternal snowcapped peaks and glaciers, are the highest of the three major mountain ranges in Mongolia, straddling the Russian and Chinese frontiers in the Far West. Tavan Bogd National Park was created as part of an effort to protect some of the last surviving areas of truly pristine wilderness left in Asia. The park is named after the “five kings” or “saints” (tavan bogd) which are in fact the snow-covered peaks of considerable stature. The five peaks are Nairamdal, Naran, Olgii, Burged, and the grandest of them all, the highest mountain in Mongolia, Khuiten Uul. In this remote region live many nomads of various ethnic minorities. Local Kazakh herdsmen keep their priceless Golden Eagles next to their yurts. Western Mongolian landscapes, snow-covered mountains, and the nomadic lifestyles of some of Mongolia’s groups such as the Kazakh and Uriankhai people will create unforgettable memories for the active traveler. Sample the local gastronomy: fermented mare’s milk, freshly-made yoghurt, thick mutton stews and fire-roasted meats.

Weather can be extremely temperamental in the Altai Mountains. Brief snowstorms are common even in summer. Summer is surprisingly cool in the Altai Mountains and you’ll need a reliable, sub-zero rated sleeping bag and tent.

The trek is suitable for any experienced traveller. Backup by horse and sometimes by vehicle.
