MUSKOX EXPEDITION

Greenland

Greenland is a very special destination due to its wild environment, wildlife and isolation. In the lands surrounding the Scoresbysund Fjord there are musk oxen, amongst other iconic wildlife such as the polar bear and the arctic fox. You can also find walruses, seals, whales and a large number of birds, including the Snowy Owl. It is a wild area and animal encounters are natural and sometimes spontaneous (if not tracked) in a large and wild space. We cannot guarantee encounters, as animals move freely, but with our knowledge and especially that of the local hunters, there is a great opportunity to see wildlife and / or trails. Observing and monitoring wildlife in wild environments is an activity of great patience and dedication. Spring is a great time to watch wildlife as there is still snow to get around with dog sledding and the trails are easier to read and find, and this is when bird activity begins. Together with the Inuit hunters from the town of Ittoqootoormiit, on the east coast of Greenland, we will take a trip on dog sleds with the aim of tracking down the musk ox, the fox and the Arctic king, the polar bear. An unforgettable expedition.

MIXER OX

The musk ox is an arctic hoofed mammal of the Bovidae family, which stands out for its thick fur and for the strong smell emitted during the seasonal session by the males, from which it derives its name. This musky scent is used to attract females during the mating season. His Inuktitut name “umingmak” translates as “the bearded man”. Moskoxen live primarily in Greenland and the Canadian Arctic of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, with small populations introduced to the American state of Alaska, the Canadian territory of Yukon, the Scandinavian Peninsula, and Siberia.

Ejnar Mikkelsen’s idea was to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the overpopulated area of Ammassalik, moving them to this region with very good hunting and fishing opportunities. But also this strategy was a response to the Norwegians on the sovereignty of the northeast coast of Greenland. Today it is a traditional Inuit town, hunter and fisherman where 550 people live.
