Volcanoes & Wildlife
Kamchatka contains a huge volcanic chain with 160 volcanoes, 30 of which are active, like Klyuchevskoy (the highest in Eurasia). It also has a great variety of fauna including notably the Brown bear, with a population of approximately 1,400 individuals spread throughout the peninsula. Other terrestrial mammals in Kamchatka are the red foxes, moose, wolverine, weasel and various species of squirrels. Notable among birds is the Steller’s sea eagle, the largest of the eagles that inhabit the planet. Kamchatka also has one the greatest variety of salmon species that every summer attract the attention of bears in search of their favorite food. As for marine life, the waters around Kamchatka are home to several species of cetaceans such as humpback whales, fin whales or the killer whales.
Day 1 – Flight Arrival and meeting at the Yelizovo airport in Kamchatka. Transfer to accommodation in a guesthouse at Yelizovo town, about 15 minutes from the airport and located in a magnificent setting overlooking the Avachinskaya and Koryasky volcanoes. Dinner and overnight at the guesthouse.
Day 2– Breakfast at the guesthouse and departure to the town of Kozyrevsk in central Kamchatka making a lunch stop in the town of Milkovo. The vehicle used for the transfers is a 6X6 truck. Accommodation at Kozyrevsk in wooden huts. From this area you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Uskhovsky, Klyuchevskoy, Kamen, Bezymianny and Tolbachik volcanoes.
Day 3 – Transfer to the foothills of Tolbachik volcano and camping in the area of the lava flows from the last eruption in 2013. After lunch we head to the upper cones of Tolbachik volcanic complex where we will have magnificent views of the volcanic plateau.
Day 4 – Transfer to the “dead forest” of Tolbachik where we will see the devastation caused by the great eruption of 1975. This area was used by the Russian space agency to test space vehicles. We will visit an area full of lava caves and we will have the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding volcanic fields and two magnificent active volcanoes: The Kizimen and Kronotsky (one of the most symmetrical and beautiful volcanoes on the planet)
Day 5 – 9-10 hours trek to the main crater of Tolbachik volcano. We will gain a height of 1,650 meters. It is the largest crater of Kamchatka and one of the largest in the world.
Day 6 – We will move by truck to the west side of Bezymianny volcano, one of the most active volcanoes of Kamchatka. From here we can see two giants: the Klyuchevskoy and Kamen volcanoes. This whole area is home to Kamchatka’s brown bear.
Day 7 – We will go by truck to the highest point of the volcanic plateau of Klyuchevskoy where the greatest gorge of the entire peninsula is located. A really wild place, a fantastic opportunity to enjoy very unique views of the following volcanoes: Kamen, Klyuchevskoy, Zimina, Ushkovsky, Tolbachik and Bezymianny.
Day 8 -Return to the guesthouse in Yelizovo (the same one of the first day). The trip will take us all day.
Day 9 – We will head to the foothills of Gorely volcano where we will establish our base camp. Ascent to the upper craters of Gorely (trekking 7-8 hours) up to a height of 1,828 meters. From the top (weather permitting) we will have a breathtaking view of several volcanoes such as Vilyuchinsky, Opala, Mutnovsky, Avachinskaya and Koryasky.
Day 10 – Transfer to the Mutnovsky volcano area. Ascent to the crater of the volcano, where you can be amazed by the fumaroles, sulfur deposits and glaciers inside the craters, an absolutely stunning place. The trek will last for 9-10 hours. “Please note that sometimes is not possible to access to the Mutnovsky area due to the snow. In this case we will have to change the itinerary”
Day 11 – Visit to the Hot Springs at Rodnikovaya valley, where after days of physical activity, we will relax in a spectacular location. After lunch we will return to Yelizovo.
Day 12 -Transfer to the slopes of Avachinskaya volcano. Ascent to Mount Verblyund, where we will enjoy a great overlooking point. We will gain 350 meters high on a trek that will take us about 3-4 hours. Accommodation in wooden huts.
Day 13 – Ascent to Avachinskaya volcano (2741 meters high). The trek will take us to one of the best view points in Kamchatka, with panoramic views of the magnificent Avacha Bay, the Pacific Ocean and Koryasky volcano. At the summit we will see the amazing red crater and the fumaroles of Avachinskaya.
Day 14 – Departure to Yelizovo. Visit to the fish market at Yelizovo, where the delicious salmon and famous Kamchatka crab is sold. Possibility of making a boat trip around Avacha Bay (not included)
Day 15 – End of the trip. Transfer to airport. Departure.
